ABOUT THE WORK

Handmade ceramic chess is an original object of play that interprets the classic iconography of chess through sculptural form and the materiality of black ceramic. The pieces are elongated, matte, with a roughened surface in places, and gold accents highlight the motifs of crowns, symbols of power, and compositional centers. This is a set in which the logic of the game merges with the language of small-scale sculpture.

History

The figures in this set are not created as neutral game elements, but as independent characters. Their silhouettes are emphasized, vertical, with a clear center of gravity. The figures of the king and queen have a ceremonial posture, while the rooks and other pieces have a more restrained, but no less refined form. The composition is based not on color, but on the tension between material depth and solid volume (instead of the usual division of black and white figures, a dark solid whole is chosen here, in which gold and platinum decor is used to create contrast).

The symbolic dimension is also important in this set. A chessboard always means more than just a game: it speaks of decision, strategy, foresight and the balance of power. Crowns, gold fragments and the more monumental proportions of the pieces reinforce this motif. This is a set in which ornate signs are combined with a restrained, focused posture of the pieces.

Stylistically, the work is close to ceremonial, neo-baroque and neo-gothic aesthetics, but remains contemporary. There are historical allusions here, but they are not copied, but processed into an authorial, sculptural language.

CARE OF CHAMOTTE SCULPTURES AND INTERIOR DECOR PIECES

The surface of fine-grain chamotte sculptures can be porous. Especially when unglazed, it may be more sensitive to friction, absorbing dirt and improper wet cleaning. The main recommended method of care is dry cleaning.

Precious metal lustres (gold, platinum, palladium, etc.) form a thin decorative layer applied in a lower-temperature firing. This layer is sensitive to abrasives and friction, so surfaces with such decoration should be cleaned with great care, avoiding scrubbing.

MATERIAL PROPERTIES

Chamotte is clay that has been fired at a high temperature and ground, then mixed into the ceramic body. It reduces shrinkage during drying and firing, helps the piece dry more evenly and can increase resistance to thermal stress, especially in larger forms. Depending on the composition of the ceramic body, the firing temperature and the surface finish, an unglazed surface may be porous and absorb dirt more easily.

These care recommendations apply to fine-grain chamotte sculptures and interior decor pieces, which may be unglazed, partly glazed or fully glazed.

CLEANING

Dry cleaning (the main method). Gently remove dust with a soft brush, guiding it towards the nozzle of a vacuum cleaner set to minimum suction. Avoid rough cloths, as they can scratch the surface or dull the shine of the decorative layer.

Wet cleaning only in exceptional cases. Washing or soaking is not recommended, especially if the surface is porous, has been repaired before or the condition of the piece is unknown. If sticky or other stubborn dirt must be removed, it is best to consult a specialist first.

DISPLAY AND STORAGE

Chamotte sculptures and interior decor pieces should be displayed on stable surfaces that can bear their weight, in places where they cannot be accidentally knocked or tipped over.

When moving a sculpture, always support it by the main body or the base. Never lift it by protruding, narrow or decorative elements.
