CARE OF CERAMIC PIECES

Stoneware mugs fired at a high temperature have low porosity and withstand everyday use. The greatest risks for them are mechanical impacts (chips, broken handles) and sudden temperature changes, which can cause cracks in the ceramic body or the glaze.

Precious metal lustres (gold, platinum, palladium, etc.) form a thin decorative layer applied in a lower-temperature firing. This layer is more sensitive to abrasives, dishwasher detergents and friction. Pieces with such decoration should be washed by hand with mild products, avoiding scrubbing. They must not be used in a microwave oven.

MATERIAL PROPERTIES

Stoneware is high-fired ceramic: during firing the body sinters and a glassy phase forms within it. Properly fired stoneware has low water absorption and high mechanical strength. These properties depend on the composition of the ceramic body and the firing schedule.

The glaze forms a glassy surface that is both decorative and protective and reduces water absorption. Additional decoration (enamels, lustres, gilding) is often applied over the glaze in a thin layer and fired at a lower temperature, so it may be more prone to wear, scratching and friction.

USE AND CLEANING

After use: rinse the mug with warm water to remove any drink residue.

Hand washing: wash with warm water and a mild detergent, using a soft sponge. Avoid scrubbing decorated areas.

Drying: dry with a soft towel or leave to dry completely.

DISHWASHER

If the mug is decorated with precious metal lustres, washing it in a dishwasher is not recommended, as the decorative layer may lose its shine and suffer mechanical and chemical damage.

If the mug has no lustre and the manufacturer permits dishwasher use, choose a gentle program, place the mugs so that they do not touch each other, and avoid harsh detergents.

If you are unsure how resistant the glaze or decoration is, hand washing is the safest choice.

PERIODIC CHECKS

Regularly inspect the rim and handle of the mug for cracks, chips or other surface damage where dirt and moisture can collect.

If the mug is decorated with precious metal lustres, watch whether the decoration is losing its shine. If you notice signs of wear, avoid any additional friction and use only the gentlest cleaning methods.
