Every porcelain miniature comes into being not because I want to make something pretty that people are looking for. Most often the idea arrives from an image I have seen, or from a sense of what the piece has to be for a personal hint, a memory or an event to settle inside it.
The work of other artists is a source too. The miniature “Against the Wind” grew out of Klaudijus Pūdymas’s bronze sculpture on the Parnidis dune, which commemorates Jean-Paul Sartre’s 1965 visit to Nida. The sculpture itself rests on a photograph by Antanas Sutkus, in which the philosopher walks the sand of the dune against the wind. So the image travels through three pairs of hands: photograph, sculpture, porcelain miniature.
I write separately about what a wearable sculpturemeans. In the miniatures I try to encode states and feelings: warmth, support, respect, trust, connection. That is why there are few forms that can be read at first glance, like a heart or a cross. More often they are abstract — they point to one object or another without repeating any literal picture of it.
